To Blog or Not to Blog...That is the Question

I have fought the urge to blog for a year now. Like so many fellow bloggers, I do a miserable job of keeping a journal and yet I crave having a family record. What has finally put me over the edge is that over the past couple of weeks, I have found myself composing blog entries in my head and taking pictures for the sole purpose of putting them on my make-believe blog. I suppose it’s time to come to terms with the fact that I want one. I have an incessant need to weigh the pros and cons of any decision, and I think finally the pros have won out. For your reading enjoyment, I have included my pro/con list:

Pros:
1) having a family record of sorts
2) easier method for keeping in touch with loved ones
3) provides a constant stream of current pictures for said loved ones
4) provides a vehicle for organizing my random thoughts throughout the day
5) I no longer need to be a closet scrapbooker—I can basically do the same thing, but be cool doing it.

Cons:
1) this may test the limits of my creative ability—how many original, clever posts can I come up with?
2) I may have said once or twice how personal blogs are like a year-round Christmas card—they can be a little self-congratulatory.
3) The whole privacy issue really gets me—I need to think this one through. I’ve always been a fairly private person and I don’t know that I want my life (as mundane as it may seem to many) broadcast…maybe a private blog is the ticket. I’ll revisit this.
4) I have enough to do already—do I really want to add blogging to my list of things to do?

If my blogging about whether to blog has already turned you off to The Bowcut Bulletin, hang in there, it can only get more interesting from here.

Jana,

Here's another good reason to blog. You may just find new friends and/or relatives. My name is Steve Bowcut. I live in Southern California, but I don't believe I know you. See, your blog is working already :-)

You will find that blogging can be very rewarding, I am glad to see you are giving it a try. And as Steve said, it is also a chance to get to know other people and distant relatives.
My name is Thomas Bowcut, I am from Idaho, but currently reside in Italy. I look forward to seeing future posts. Welcome aboard.

Ah...one "t" Bowcuts--you don't come across those very often. My husband is the true Bowcut--originally from Salt Lake City. Because of the single "t" I would guess you're not too distantly related. Thanks for chiming in--we'll see how long I can keep up the blogging.

Jana! I'm so excited to read your blog and stay acquainted with your happenings. it is a big step and I understand your privacy concerns. it is a tricky balance.

as for the journaling part, it is my only record right now and actually makes me write more than I would otherwise because I know people check and want to read.

I have some more thoughts, but I'll email you instead...

Because I have a compulsion to get the whole story, I started at the bottom. Anyone who reads your blog will be better for it; you're a talented writer.

Thanks, Rachael. Actually, I've been a silent reader of your blog recently and I take notes from you. And the video of Jon's botched haircut is truly classic.
